Ambisonic and spatial audio can make or break immersion in 360° video — here's what to look for and why it matters.
Visual immersion gets most of the attention in 360° video, but audio plays an equally important role in making a scene feel real.
What is ambisonic/spatial audio: unlike standard stereo sound (fixed left/right), ambisonic audio is recorded to change based on your head direction — a sound from your left in the video moves to sound like it's behind you if you turn around, matching what you're looking at.
Why it matters: without spatial audio, a 360° video can feel disconnected — you might be looking at a waterfall on your right while the ambient roar plays evenly in both ears, breaking the illusion of presence.
How to tell if a video has it: most platforms that support ambisonic audio label it in the video description or player interface (YouTube shows a spatial audio icon in supported clips). If a 360° video sounds identical no matter which direction you're facing, it likely uses standard non-spatial audio.
For creators: capturing spatial audio requires a dedicated ambisonic microphone (four-capsule designs are common) rather than a standard camera mic, and most consumer 360° cameras include a basic spatial mic built in — checking your camera's spec sheet for 'ambisonic' or 'spatial audio' support is worth doing before a big shoot.
